Ovidius University students analyze the parameters of sustainable urban development within the Erasmus + WAVE project
09.04.2022

The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Agricultural Sciences (FNAS) of the Ovidius University of Constanța (UOC) organized between April 8-9, 2022, an inter-institutional field application on the sustainable urban development of Constanța. This field research represents a part of the "Living Lab" activities organized within the Erasmus + WAVE project: Water Areas Vision for Europe - Integrated knowledge and visions for sustainable water landscapes in Europe (grant no. 2020-1-RO01-KA203-080122, www.wave-project.org), coordinator of the field application Dr Mirela Paraschiv from FNAS informs.
The field application was attended by a mix of participants: undergraduate students from the Geography and Geography of Tourism programs, graduate students from Applied Geography and Evaluation of Tourist Resources and Biodiversity Conservation programs from FNAS, as well as colleagues from the Faculty of Geography of the University of Bucharest interested in the lake complex Siutghiol-Tăbăcărie, which is a Natura 2000 site and a case study area within the Erasmus + WAVE project.
"We mainly followed the impact of intense urban development and pollution on the protected area. In the discussion with the participating students, prof. univ. dr. Cristian Iojă, president of the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE) - South-East Europe Chapter, stressed the need for efficient use of participatory urban planning tools for better management of the two urban water areas", Dr Paraschiv said.
During the field application participants visited the Constanța Nord treatment plant and its water treatment technical spaces. Discussions on the impact on the local community, tourism and the marine environment followed. Another visit was made to the National Company Maritime Ports Administration Constanța. During the visit, similar problems represented the subject of discussion, moderated by Dr Daniyar Memedemin from FNAS, environmental protection and biodiversity conservation expert.
In addition, the role of the built heritage in the sustainable urban development of Constanța was discussed from conservational and management perspectives. Participants could familiarize themselves with urban regeneration initiatives during a guided tour in the peninsular area offered by Radu Niculescu a second-year FNAS student enrolled in the Geography of Tourism program.

Participatory planning workshop at Constanța
02.04.2022

The Romanian Professional Association of Urban Planners (APUR) Constanța branch organized, on Saturday, April 2, 2022, at the Ovidius University of Constanța, the first workshop within a training program for urban development planning skills in a non-formal context. The workshop was addressed to APUR members and students involved in the Erasmus + WAVE project: Water Areas Vision for Europe - Integrated knowledge and visions for sustainable water landscapes in Europe (grant no. 2020-1-RO01-KA203-080122, www.wave-project.org ), implemented by Ovidius University of Constanța, through the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (FNAS), in partnership with APUR.
The aim of the workshop was for the participants to acquire skills for the first stage of an urban development planning process: to identify real problems of the development of the urban territory and highlight their unfavorable effects.
The speaker, architect Ionică Bucur, president of the APUR Constanța Branch, talked about the content and application of the “dialogue with the problem” method in participatory planning processes. He also stressed the practical aspects of this approach needed for determining concrete development problems of Constanța municipality, addressable through the resources available to the local branch of APUR, emphasizing the role of teamwork in urban planning.
Among the dysfunctions in urban development dysfunctions, APUR members were especially interested in implementing local urban policies, while participating geography, biology and ecology students from FNAS prioritized discussions on the Lake Tăbăcărie case.
In the second phase of analysis, the next workshop will include the determination of SMART goals and objectives of a short-term intervention plan, focusing on two main areas: the practice of local urban policies and the protection of urban natural areas in Constanța.
In parallel, members of the APUR Constanța branch will work on developing a training program focused on lifelong learning of the professional skills among local urban planners, including methods and tools for assessing and certifying skills acquired in a non-formal context.

Debates at Ovidius University in Constanța on the sustainable development of Siutghiol and Tăbăcăriei lakes
14.02.2022

Ovidius University of Constanța (UOC), through the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences (FNAS), in partnership with the Romanian Professional Association of Urban Planners (APUR), implements the Erasmus + WAVE project: Water Areas Vision for Europe - Integrated knowledge and visions for sustainable water landscapes in Europe (grant no. 2020-1-RO01-KA203-080122).
On Monday, February 14, 2022, representatives of the APUR Constanța Branch provided feedback to bachelor and master students from FNAS involved in the project during a meeting organized as part of the “living lab” activities planned within the project.
Following the online training and field research carried out in 2021, FNAS trainees presented to APUR members the results of their activities in the first stage of the project on current issues and sustainable territorial development of Tăbăcăriei and Siutghiol lakes (Natura 2000 site).
During the meeting, APUR representatives offered guidance and recommendations to the students to improve the quality of their work and increase the level of complexity of the proposed results.
The Erasmus + WAVE project: Water Areas Vision for Europe - Integrated knowledge and visions for sustainable water landscapes is implemented between December 2020 and December 2022, and is a partnership between seven universities and three professional associations in the European Union, bringing together academics, researchers and practitioners in the fields of geography, biology, urban planning, architecture and landscape planning: Ovidius University of Constanța (leader in the consortium), Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism (Romania), HSWT Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University (Germany), Nürtingen-Geislingen University (Germany), University of Naples Federico II (Italy), Estonian University of Life Sciences (Estonia), ULB Brussels - Faculty of Architecture La Chambre Horta (Belgium), APUR - Romanian Professional Association of Urban Planners), LE: NOTRE Institute (Netherlands), ISOCARP Institute (Netherlands).
The project aims at extracurricular professional training of bachelor and master students in the field of sustainable territorial development, from an international interdisciplinary perspective, and participants have the opportunity to obtain transferable credits in addition to the university study programs they pursue.
The activities carried out within the WAVE project aim at an initial theoretical training of students in the field of sustainable development of urban water areas through a series of interdisciplinary online lectures by professors from partner universities, along with practical teamwork under the coordination of the academics involved in the project, carried out locally: in Constanța and Bucharest (Romania); Nürtingen, Freising and Neubrandenburg (Germany); Naples (Italy); Tartu (Estonia); Brussels (Belgium). Case studies represented by lakes, rivers or canals are analyzed and sustainable development proposals are developed and discussed with representatives of local public authorities and institutions, economic actors, local communities and NGOs.
Further information about the project and its activities can be found on the project's official website: www.wave-project.org.
